Lake Champlain is the largest lake in the U.S. after the Great Lakes. It is a deep glacial lake and has a multitude of beautiful islands, mostly in its northern section. Burlington, Vermont sits on the lake’s eastern shore. It is a vibrant and progressive city, and one that is very bicycle friendly, with an excellent trail system. On this tour we will explore some of these trails and spend the rest of our time on the islands, where we will ride the backroads, have a chance to get on the water, bike past wineries and orchards, and experience scenic New England. Here’s a quick preview.

Tour Leaders: to be announced

  • Day 1

Meet at our opening hotel in downtown Burlington. An introductory meeting at 5:00pm will begin our tour with beverages, snacks, maps and details, followed by dinner (included).

  • Day 2

15/25 miles - Bike from our hotel to the nearby Burlington Bikeway. We’ll spend the morning biking out-and-back, first along the shore of Lake Champlain, then following the urban bike paths through woodlands, parks and quiet residential streets. A few moderate hills will warm us up today. Back to downtown Burlington for lunch. The afternoon ride is optional. You may wish to enjoy downtown attractions, Church Street, or the stunning scenery of Lake Champlain.

  • Day 3

35 miles - Bike from our downtown Burlington hotel to North Hero Island, where we will spend two nights. Today’s ride begins on the gorgeous Burlington Bikeway, riding north along the shore of Lake Champlain. As we leave the city behind, we'll cycle the Island Line Trail, which is probably one of the most scenic rides you will ever take, with the lake on either side and stunning mountains in all directions. We hop on the very short bike ferry to Grand Isle for lunch (included), then we bike mostly back roads to our lodging on North Hero Island.

  • Day 4

30 miles - Bike from North Hero Island to Isle La Motte, out and back. The morning ride is a wonderful mix of shoreline roads with a few moderate (short) hills thrown in. We’ll stop at an apple orchard for a break and a snack. Hoping for apple cider donuts! Your afternoon ride has plenty of options, depending upon your energy level. You might wish to kick back and enjoy the scenery at our Inn, or rent a kayak and get on that water. We’ll celebrate tonight at our included dinner. Toasting and belly laughs are recommended!

  • Day 5

35 miles – Today we’ll finish up our tour with a superb ride from North Hero Island, across South Hero and on to Burlington, using bike routes and paths. We will end up back downtown where we began our adventure a few days ago. Optional mileage on the bike is available on a variety of bike paths and routes in the city. Enjoy the downtown scene – and try some fudge or a creemee – a Vermont specialty! This ends our tour of this charming region.
